Founded back in 2009, FanDuel and the FanDuel Sportsbook are parts of the FanDuel Group which is the American Operations of Flutter Entertainment, a bookmaker based in Ireland. The FanDuel Group is based in New York and while they are looked at as one of the pioneers of daily fantasy sports or DFS, FanDuel trails their rival DraftKings in site usage and overall player action.

FanDuel.com is split into two different segments: the DFS side and the Sportsbook side. Both pieces of the website have geographical restraints which we will cover a little later on in this article. Signing up is as easy as entering your personal details and within a few minutes, you can start playing contests for free or for real money.

FanDuel Review: Daily Fantasy Sports

DFS is what FanDuel has primarily become synonymous with in the sports world. FanDuel currently has about six million active users across all its platforms in the U.S. and Canada. Once a player has deposited some money via credit card, PayPal, or online banking, they are free to engage in contests ranging from $0.01 to hundreds or sometimes thousands of dollars per entry. Overwhelming? Don’t worry! FanDuel does a great job of easing you into things with Beginners Only contests that pit novice players against each other for low stakes.

Once you get a little more comfortable with how things work in the FanDuel DFS world, you can check out all of the different types of contests the site has to offer. The most popular contests with the highest stakes and prizes are called Guaranteed Prize Pools or GPPs, often referred to as tournaments. Some of the largest GPPs can have well over 100,000 entries, usually with a maximum entry cap as well. The holy grail of the FanDuel GPP world is the NFL Sunday Million Tournament which awards $1 million to the 1st place finisher out of the field of well over 300,000 entries. And you better believe the Sunday Million fills up each and every week.

These large scale GPPs are popular but with each player able to enter hundreds of different line-ups, you can quickly see how winning one is akin to winning the lottery. Another option that FanDuel offers is Single Entry tournaments, where each player is only allowed to enter one unique line-up. Although the prizes aren’t quite as large, the odds of winning improve drastically and it is also a little easier on the bankroll.

If high risk, high return is not your game style, you can check out the multiplier games that are also popular. The 50/50 game, also known as cash games, is exactly what it sounds like: the top scoring half of the contest entries doubles their entry fee, so you win small amounts a lot more often than a GPP. There are also Triple Ups and so on as well, where only the top third of the players receive their entry fee tripled rather than doubled.

FanDuel even offers free to enter contests that have been popular, especially for huge sporting events. Not only do they offer various freeroll tournaments throughout the season, but they have special entries for Super Bowl Bingo or Christmas Day NBA. Needless to say these little bonus tournaments are a nice way of giving back to the players who grind all season long.

Not a fan of the NFL? Not to worry, because if you are a fan of nearly any sport, FanDuel has you covered! They also offer NBA, MLB, NHL, PGA, NCAA Football and Basketball, NASCAR, Tennis, Soccer, and even eSports. With such a wide range of sports available to play on, FanDuel promises to be an affordable source of entertainment no matter what time of year it is.

As you play more contests with FanDuel there are incentives along the way to keep you hooked into their ecosystem. The FanDuel Players Club is a point system where players can accumulate FanDuel Points every time they play. You get five FanDuel Points for every real dollar spent in a contest and can use these points to enter GPPs instead of spending from your bankroll. As you progress through the ranks you get more and more bonuses, such as weekly and monthly freeroll tournaments, weekly promotions, FanDuel merchandise, and personal account management and support.

FanDuel Review: Sportsbook

The FanDuel Sportsbook is a relatively new addition to their stable of sites and is very limited in its availability. Currently, it is only available in New Jersey, Colorado, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana, and only in retail settings for New York and Iowa. The rest of the country and Canada are unable to play the FanDuel Sportsbook at this time, though more and more states have discussed legalizing sports gambling in the near future. The Sportsbook offers the same deposit and withdrawal options that the DFS site does and offers the same high level of customer service as well.

The FanDuel Sportsbook has received rave reviews thus far though in its infancy as a Sportsbook. Clearly the company recognizes that its user interface from the DFS side of things is extremely friendly and have adopted a lot of the same functions into their Sportsbook.

They offer many of the same sports that you can play DFS with including the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NCAA, PGA, NASCAR, and more! All of the popular ways to wager are here as well from the basics like point spreads, totals, and money lines to more obscure bets like quarter or half totals, first to score, or total points even or odd. They have their fair share of player props as well giving players a wide range of markets to bet on.

FanDuel Review: Mobile App

Like any good service company, FanDuel offers an exceptional mobile experience when playing either the DFS or Sportsbook site. You do need to have your mobile phone location services on so that FanDuel can ensure that you are in a state that permits DFS or sports betting, but other than that it is a very smooth and user-friendly experience. The FanDuel app is available in the iOS store, but for Android you will have to download it from FanDuel’s website as the Google Play Store does have a rule about not allowing gambling applications.

FanDuel Review: Disadvantages

With any service or website, there are some issues that we can raise that we wish went a little smoother. The splash page after you login to the FanDuel DFS site shows you an overwhelming list of mega GPPs for various different sports. It is a flashy page that has a few different types of listings that you can click on, but if you want to find a tournament or particular sport in a hurry, it can be a little cumbersome to navigate. Even when you do find the sport you want, you need to sort the contests again as they do not list them in order of size or availability or entry fee. There are a few Featured GPPs at the top, and then a huge list of other contests below them. It would be nice if the site could remember how a player wants their contests to be sorted every time they login, but this really is a minor gripe.

Another complaint is that the pros often have an edge over the public by having enormous bankrolls and having maximum entries in each GPP. While this is true, these pros are still playing by all of the rules and adhering to the FanDuel policies. There are smaller tournaments and single-entry tournaments that level the playing field and allow improved odds for all entries.

Pros / Cons
  • Excellent Sportsbook design
  • Fantastic choice of sports & bet types
  • Exclusive daily fantasy sports & tournament types
  • Overwhelming choice for beginners
  • Minimum $10 deposit
  • Very competitive pro players

FanDuel Review: Conclusion

It is difficult to really complain about FanDuel as it is one of the two main horses in the two-horse race that is the DFS industry. The user interface of the site is top notch and extremely easy to pick up and learn. Joining up is simple as well, all you need is your personal information and a way to deposit some money. The wide range of sports and game styles will have players hooked in no time and FanDuel’s innovation and creativity will keep you coming back for more.
